What to expect

What happens at your first appointment

  1. Your history, in your words

    The consultant asks about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and your general health and medication. Bring a list of medicines and any earlier test results.

  2. A neurological examination

    A structured check of strength, sensation, reflexes, coordination, eye movements and walking. It is not painful and usually takes ten to fifteen minutes.

  3. A working diagnosis and a plan

    The consultant explains what they think is going on and whether tests are needed. Where a diagnosis is clear at the first visit, treatment can start straight away.

  4. Tests, follow-up and a letter to your GP

    Any investigations are booked through the host hospital. You get a follow-up appointment to go through results, and your GP receives a full letter.

Diagnostics

Tests we arrange

Not every patient needs tests. Your consultant will only arrange the investigations that change the diagnosis or the treatment.

  • EEG (electroencephalogram) for seizures and blackouts
  • Nerve conduction studies and EMG for neuropathy and muscle conditions
  • MRI and CT of the brain and spine through the host hospital
  • Blood tests, including vitamin, thyroid and inflammatory screens
  • Sleep studies, where sleep disorders are suspected
  • Botulinum toxin injections for chronic migraine

Frequently asked questions

How quickly will I be seen?

Within two weeks of us receiving your GP referral. Urgent referrals are triaged by the consultant and can be seen sooner.

Do I need a referral to see a neurologist?

Yes. A GP referral means the consultant has your medical history and any earlier test results before you arrive, and most health insurers require one. Your GP can send it through Healthlink or email it to the clinic.

Can I self-refer?

You can contact us directly by phone or email and we will help you arrange a GP referral if you do not already have one.

What does a private neurology consultation cost?

Fees are confirmed when your appointment is booked and before you attend. Our patient information page explains what is included and how follow-up appointments and tests are charged.

Is it covered by VHI, Laya or Irish Life Health?

Most Irish health insurance plans contribute towards private consultant fees, and many cover diagnostic tests in full or in part. The amount depends on your plan, so check with your insurer before your visit. You receive a receipt to claim with.

Which hospital will I attend?

Our neurologists hold clinics at Beacon Hospital in Sandyford, Blackrock Clinic and Bon Secours Hospital in Glasnevin. The clinic is confirmed when your appointment is booked.

What does a neurologist treat?

A neurologist diagnoses and treats conditions of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Common reasons to be referred include migraine and headache, seizures, blackouts, dizziness, memory problems, tremor, numbness and tingling, weakness, and sleep problems.

Do you offer Botox for migraine?

Yes. Botulinum toxin injections are an established preventive treatment for chronic migraine and are provided at our clinics by Dr Raga Qasem.
